How to Choose a Cocktail Shaker
By The Aged And Amber Spirits Team

Cocktail shakers come in more variety than most home bartenders realize, and picking the right one genuinely affects how easy and enjoyable making drinks actually is.
Boston Shaker
A two-piece shaker consisting of a metal tin and a mixing glass (or two metal tins of different sizes) that fit together via friction seal. Boston shakers are the professional bartending standard, favored for their larger capacity, durability, and ease of use once you learn the technique for sealing and separating the two pieces.
Cobbler Shaker
A three-piece shaker with a built-in strainer and a small cap, all in one unit. Cobbler shakers are generally easier for beginners since there's no separate strainer to manage and no technique needed to seal the pieces together — but they're prone to getting stuck from pressure buildup, and the smaller capacity limits how many drinks you can make at once.
Material Considerations
Stainless steel is the standard choice for durability and proper heat transfer (which matters for actually chilling a drink quickly and effectively). Avoid shakers with any plastic components in contact with the drink, since plastic can retain odors and doesn't chill as efficiently as metal.
Size
For home use, a shaker that comfortably fits 2-3 standard cocktail servings (roughly 24-28 oz total capacity) covers most single-drink and light-entertaining needs without being unwieldy to handle and shake properly.
Which Should You Choose?
If you're serious about developing real bartending technique and want the professional standard: a Boston shaker, despite its slightly steeper learning curve. If you want something simple, contained, and beginner-friendly with less to manage: a cobbler shaker is a completely legitimate choice for home use.
Beyond the Shaker Itself
A proper shaker is only useful alongside a good strainer (a Hawthorne strainer, with its coiled spring, is the standard companion for a Boston shaker) and a jigger for accurate measuring — building out these three tools together makes a much bigger difference to your cocktails than the shaker alone.
