Boston Beer Company was founded in 1984 by Jim Koch, using a family lager recipe, and Samuel Adams Boston Lager — a Vienna-style amber lager — became one of the flagship beers of the American craft-beer revival. Utopias sits at the opposite extreme of the range: an extreme, barrel-aged, high-ABV specialty release far beyond the core Boston Lager, part of a much larger, highly seasonal lineup (Octoberfest, Summer Ale, Winter Lager) not currently stocked beyond these two.
