Who was Dom Pérignon?

A real Benedictine monk and cellarer at the Abbey of Hautvillers (1638–1715). The popular claim that he "invented" sparkling Champagne is a later marketing legend, not literal history, though he made real, documented contributions to cross-plot blending technique.

Was Dom Pérignon a monk?

Yes, a real Benedictine cellarer at Hautvillers Abbey; the specific claim that he invented champagne's bubbles is a later marketing legend, not historical fact.

Why is Dom Pérignon so expensive?

Dom Pérignon releases no standard non-vintage wine at all — every bottle is a declared vintage from a single exceptional year, aged for years on its lees under exacting Grand Cru sourcing, which drives both its scarcity and its price.
