VS vs. VSOP vs. XO: The Cognac Grade Comparison

Cognac's grading system is refreshingly straightforward once you understand what each abbreviation actually requires by law.

VS (Very Special)

The entry-level cognac designation, requiring a minimum of two years aging in oak for the youngest component in the blend. VS cognac tends to show brighter, more direct fruit character with lighter oak influence, and is frequently used in cocktails as well as casual sipping.

VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale)

Requiring a minimum of four years aging for the youngest component, VSOP represents a meaningful step up in complexity, generally showing more developed oak, dried fruit, and spice character than VS while remaining accessible in price — often considered the sweet spot for both sipping and quality cocktails.

XO (Extra Old)

Requiring a minimum of ten years aging for the youngest component (a requirement that was actually increased from six years back in 2018, giving XO a genuinely higher bar than it once had), XO cognac delivers significantly more depth, with rich dried fruit, leather, and baking spice developed through extended barrel time — generally positioned as a premium sipping tier.

Beyond XO

Some houses offer even older or more exclusive tiers beyond XO — often under proprietary names rather than a standardized abbreviation — representing extensively aged, limited-production cognac at the top of a given house's range.

What the Grades Don't Tell You

Like Scotch age statements, cognac's grades reflect the youngest component in a blend, not the average age — a VSOP could theoretically contain some considerably older cognac blended in alongside the four-year minimum. The grade is a reliable floor, not a complete picture of what's actually in the bottle.

Choosing the Right Grade

For cocktails and casual mixing: VS offers good value without paying for aging complexity that gets somewhat masked by other ingredients anyway. For sipping neat with real complexity at a reasonable price: VSOP is the most commonly recommended sweet spot. For a genuinely premium, extensively aged sipping experience: XO delivers noticeably more depth, at a correspondingly higher price.
