How Is Vodka Made?

Vodka's production goal is fundamentally different from most other spirits: rather than showcasing the raw ingredient's flavor, the entire process is built to strip flavor down to a clean, neutral baseline.

Step 1: Fermentation

Whatever base ingredient is used — grain, potato, grapes, or another fermentable source — is first fermented with yeast, converting sugars into alcohol and producing a base liquid similar to a simple beer or wine, depending on the ingredient.

Step 2: Distillation

This is where vodka diverges sharply from whiskey or rum. Vodka is typically distilled to a very high proof, often 190 proof or higher before dilution, using continuous column stills that strip out the vast majority of flavor compounds along with the water — the opposite goal of pot-still distillation, which deliberately preserves more character.

Step 3: Filtration

Many vodkas undergo additional filtration after distillation, commonly through activated charcoal, to remove any remaining flavor compounds and impurities, further reinforcing the clean, neutral profile the category is built around.

Step 4: Dilution to Bottling Proof

The highly concentrated distillate is diluted with water down to standard bottling proof (typically 80 proof / 40% ABV in the US), with water quality itself becoming a genuine point of differentiation and marketing for some premium brands.

Why the Process Matters More Than the Ingredient

Because vodka's defining characteristic is neutrality rather than showcasing a specific raw ingredient's flavor (the opposite philosophy of whiskey), the distillation and filtration steps matter more to the final product's character than the base ingredient does — a genuinely different production philosophy than most other spirits categories.

Premium vs. Standard Vodka

Differences between premium and standard vodka often come down to water quality, number of distillation passes, and filtration method rather than dramatically different base ingredients — refinements within the same fundamental "distill to high proof, filter, dilute" process rather than a completely different production approach.
