Types of Vodka: Wheat vs. Rye vs. Potato
By The Aged And Amber Spirits Team

Vodka is designed to be neutral, but that doesn't mean every base ingredient produces an identical result. Here's what actually changes between the major styles.
Wheat Vodka
The most common base for many well-known vodka brands, wheat vodka is generally described as smooth and slightly sweet, with a clean, soft mouthfeel that's become something of a default expectation for the category.
Rye Vodka
Rye-based vodka, historically significant in Poland and parts of Eastern Europe, tends to be described as having a slightly spicier, more robust character than wheat vodka — subtle given vodka's overall neutral design, but noticeable to experienced tasters doing side-by-side comparisons.
Potato Vodka
Potato vodka is often described as having a heavier, creamier, sometimes slightly earthy mouthfeel compared to grain-based vodka — a genuinely different textural experience even when the overall flavor remains close to neutral by design.
Corn Vodka
A less common but real category, corn-based vodka tends toward a slightly sweeter profile, similar in spirit to how corn contributes sweetness to bourbon, though far more muted given vodka's heavy filtration.
How Much Does This Actually Matter?
Because vodka is specifically distilled and filtered to minimize flavor, these differences are considerably more subtle than the equivalent grain choice in whiskey. Most casual drinkers won't reliably distinguish wheat from rye from potato vodka in a blind taste test — the differences show up more in texture and mouthfeel than in dramatic flavor distinction, and even then, mainly to drinkers actively comparing multiple styles side by side.
Choosing Based on Base Ingredient
If you've never compared bases directly, a genuinely interesting exercise is tasting a wheat, rye, and potato vodka side by side, neat, at room temperature, specifically to notice the mouthfeel differences — a more instructive way to understand vodka's real (if subtle) internal variety than reading marketing copy about any single bottle.
